Nevada Launches Aggressive Ad Campaign to Snag California Businesses

by Brandi Bodnar

In response to the poor California business environment, an aggressive new advertising campaign with the dramatic tagline “You’re Out of Business” aims to draw businesses to Nevada.

“We’re not tip-toeing around anymore. Businesses need to know they are not trapped into the current California economy. Nevada offers a luring escape route we want everyone to hear about,” said Somer Hollingsworth president and CEO of the Nevada Development Authority.

The campaign ads cite hard facts: California workers’ compensation costs are 30-60% higher than Nevada’s; utilities costs are 28-36% more; and the Family Medical Leave Act ensures Nevada’s employees are back to work in three months, not seven.

“This is the most aggressive campaign we’ve launched to date. Word is getting out quickly: Nevada is the place to be. The ads are meant to attract attention. We want to call California businesses to action,” said Hollingsworth.

Launched in partnership with the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada and Northern Nevada Development Authority, the ads urge business leaders to “Look hard at doing business in Nevada, or face the possibility of not doing business at all.”

The state offers a 24-hour turnaround response and a toll free number, 1-800-336-1600, for immediate free and confidential comparative cost assessments.

“There are so many California companies relocating to Nevada because of our pro-business, low tax environment. We want others to feel comfortable when considering a move,” said Hollingsworth.

Businesses that relocate often tell Hollingsworth they should have moved to Nevada sooner because their profits and productivity have risen since the move.

“I was fed up with the California business environment. I’d always heard Nevada was a great place to conduct business, so I decided to take a serious look into moving. The NDA provided a statistical analysis proving our company could be more productive and pay less tax by moving to Las Vegas. My only regret: we didn’t leave California sooner,” said Mitch Greif of Coast Converters Inc., who is in the process of relocating from Los Angeles, Calif.

Nevada continually receives national attention as a thriving economic environment. Employment growth in Las Vegas scored second in the nation for the last five years and Las Vegas ranked as the second top performing city across the U.S. in a study released earlier this year from the Milken Institute.

Nevada also offers excellent state incentives, a superior telecommunications infrastructure and top-ten scoring McCarran International Airport.

“Our economy is making headlines everyday. California businesses that want to succeed, have to make the move or face the reality of going out businesses,” said Hollingsworth.

Since its inception in 1956, the Nevada Development Authority (NDA) continues to diversify and improve the economy of southern Nevada. The non-profit organization is directly responsible for creating thousands of jobs for Valley residents by recruiting new non-gaming companies to the area and playing an active role in local expansion of existing businesses. Over the last five years, southern Nevada has realized an economic impact of $7.4 billion from the more than 39,450 jobs created through NDA’s economic development efforts.
