R.J. Gator’s experiences record growth through franchise expansion in Florida

By Tim Timoteo

Jupiter, Fla. – With 10 locations scheduled to open by the end of this year, Florida-based R.J. Gator’s continues to seek out qualified franchise partners as the company expands throughout the Southeast.

“We have incorporated franchising as a growth strategy,” said Tim Timoteo, president and chief executive officer. “Our newest franchise is located in Oviedo, Florida, and are fortunate to have outstanding partners and franchisees who continue to play a significant role in our success and growth.”

R.J. Gator’s has announced record growth for 2005, increasing its number of locations by more than 50% this year. Since opening with one location in Indiantown Road nearly 20 years ago, R.J. Gator’s has grown to a 22-unit chain with locations throughout the southeast. We will have over 30 units by Year 2006.

According to Timoteo, new units will range from 4,000 to 6,000 square feet and will be freestanding. Each location will include large outdoor patios, U-shaped indoor-outdoor bars, plasma screen televisions and open air kitchens. All new stores will be based on the “everglades lodge theme,” which was refined in the recently opened Stuart, Florida restaurant.

To ensure continued success, R.J. Gator’s development department looks for franchisees that possess a solid business background, casual dining restaurant experience, meet financial requirements and is willing to have an operating partner.

In return, the chain offers the qualified franchisee a complete support package, including comprehensive training, extended opening assistance and real estate, marketing and advertising assistance. Most importantly, the company offers the franchisee an opportunity to be in business for himself, but not by himself.

Terry Jones, a franchisee from Bradenton, Florida, currently has one franchise unit open and is in the process of opening a second restaurant Sarasota, Florida, which will include a large outdoor patio and seating for 270 people.

“R.J. Gator’s concept, food and décor are refreshingly different from other restaurant chains,” said Jones. “Becoming involved with this company is a great opportunity for anyone interested in franchising a restaurant with an excellent atmosphere and food.” Terry Jones & Partner were formerly with the Denny’s Corporation.

To establish and construct an R.J. Gator’s franchise, the franchisee should expect to make a capital investment of approximately $600,000 to $1.2 million, excluding land. There are many variables involved, such as local building codes, contractor charges, landlord contributions and market conditions.

The franchise fee, which is $35,000, secures the right to own and operate an R.J. Gator’s unit in a protected territory, as well as the use of the R.J. Gator’s trade name, trademarks, recipes, distinctive décor and business operations practices.
