Host/Satellite Development Program
Traditional development of MaggieMoo's stores meant that each location was built as a full production unit, complete with the necessary equipment and staff to both produce and sell the ice cream. Average store size under this scenario was 1200 square feet. For franchisees who desired a second or third store, it was again achieved through the development of a full producing and retail unit. Obviously, the costs incurred under this method of development were substantial.
With the new Host/Satellite program, multi-unit developers candesignate their first store as the production unit, or "host." Each subsequent store developed in the market would then be a "satellite" or non-production, retail-only facility. The host unit produces ice cream for its own retail sales, as well as for the retail sales of up to three satellite units. The size of the satellite unit can range from 500 to 1000 square feet, with construction costs of up to 22% lower than the traditional production unit. Franchisees can also realize significant cost savings in rent, utilities, and labor in the satellite units.
Franchisees utilize a van or truck equipped with a freezer box to deliver ice cream from the production unit to the satellite units. This method of delivery in a local market does not compromise the quality, freshness, or "homemade taste" of the MaggieMoo's ice cream. |
The Host/Satellite program allows MaggieMoo's franchisees to develop locations in areas where the high cost per square foot would typically prohibit entry in certain markets, and also expand into high profile centers located in existing markets. Additionally, the Host/Satellite program lends itself perfectly to catering and wholesale opportunities.
MaggieMoo's is very excited about this program, and feels that it will allow their franchisees to expand their businesses more quickly and efficiently. Response from franchisees has been immediate and enthusiastic. The first host and satellite units to be developed under this program will open in 2001.

Cake Program
MaggieMoo's has a major goal for 2001 - every store should become "the place to go" for cakes and party packages in their market. Recent renovations and additions to their existing ice cream cake program provide simple yet effective ways for MaggieMoo's franchisees to increase sales and build brand exposure.
Redesigned marketing materials include new menu boards, brochures, and cake boxes, all of which promote the uniqueness of a MaggieMoo's cake (where else can you customize the cake flavor, ice cream flavor, mix-in selection, decorations, and message?) and encourage repeat business.
The standard line of cakes has been redesigned and expanded to include a new Strawberry Cheesecake, Maggie's Fudge Fantasy, and other favorites. Custom order cakes are also available.
Sales building programs include birthday party packages, where Maggie herself delivers the cake and presents gift bags featuring Maggie merchandise to each guest at the party, as well as a corporate cake program, where MaggieMoo's becomes the "Official Cake Supplier" for local offices and businesses.
Regional "road show" presentations are planned for early spring to introduce the new program to franchisees and demonstrate operational tactics so that all stores can reap the rewards of increased cake sales. MaggieMoo's is looking forward to the surge in cake business this summer!
